Is Your Shower Curtain Making You Sick?

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

It sure could, according to a study from the Center for Health, Environment and Justice.

New shower curtains don't just smell bad... they could be harmful, too.

After testing shower curtains bought from name retailers such as K-mart and Bed, Bath & Beyond, the Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) detected more than 108 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from a single vinyl shower curtain.

Once the polyvinyl chloride or PVC shower curtain is unwrapped from its package and hung up, its compounds are released into the shower area. The toxic emissions can last more than 28 days, according to CHEJ.

Foodconsumer.org reports "these organic compounds have been linked to diseases such as cancer, and reproductive toxicity and they are also known to cause conditions such as kidney and liver damage as well as damage to the central nervous system and other important parts of the body."

CHEJ can't say that the amount of VOCs you'll inhale while showering or absorb through your skin is enough to actually cause damage. That of course would depend on a person's total toxic load.

But who really wants to find out?

We say, toss the curtain and go glass... it's safer and resists bacteria, too!
