How to Care for Acid-Etched or Sandblasted Glass Showers

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

The goal of caring for etched or sandblasted glass showers is to protect the interior shower glass and to preserve the crispness of exterior "frosted" designs, patterns and strips.

Acid Etched Shower Cleaning

Acid-etched and sanblasted glass showers have a semi-opaque frosted look. Exterior shower glass is treated with an abrasive procedure to create a pattern, unique design or to add solid privacy strips around a glass enclosure.

The goal of caring for etched or sandblasted glass showers is two-fold, yet simple:

  • Protect the interior shower glass from water stains, soap scum, dirt build-up and bacteria. Stained shower glass is unappealing to everyone, but easy to prevent.
  • Preserve the crispness of exterior "frosted" designs, patterns and strips applied to the exterior shower glass. Oil build-up causes the designs, patterns or privacy strips on acid-etched and sandblasted glass to become blotchy and lose crispness. And in a bathroom, oil can come from anywhere: hands, soaps, lotions, even pets nosing at the shower door.

Here's how to care for both sides of your glass shower:

  1. Order a glass protection application when purchasing your glass shower. It is the best way to protect interior shower glass. We trust ClearShield for all our glass showers. This mulit-molecular poylmer resin chemically seals a protective barrier to porous glass surfaces so limescale from hard water cannot stain the surface or cause corrosion that lets dirt and bacteria settle into tiny crevices.
  2. After showering, use a squeegee to prevent water streaks from drying on your shower glass.
  3. Spray a gentle cleaner, such as ClearShield Aftercare, on the interior and exterior shower glass every two weeks.
  4. Be sure to use a lint-free towel when cleaning the frosted glass. Paper towels or other cleaning materials can leave small bits stuck to sandblasted or acid-etched glass.
  5. Wipe in a gentle circular motion. Do not scrub or use pressure on your patterned glass. For stubborn spot removal on sandblasted or acid-etched glass, use a product that cuts oil such as Goo Gone. Then clean again with gentle spray cleaner.
