Bad tips for something as simple as cleaning glass shower doors can cost you a brand new shower.

You sure can find a lot of advice on the internet. But unless you're on an expert's website, one that lists a phone number for your questions, DO NOT FOLLOW the advice.

Bad tips for something as simple as cleaning glass shower doors can cost you a brand new shower.

Here are just a few examples of the disastrous advice you'll find.

Cleaning Glass Shower Doors:

Question: How do I clean my glass shower doors?

The Bad Advice

Anonymous Site 1: "Try white vinegar and a nylon pan scrubber."

Anonymous Site 2: "White toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide and gently scrubbing."

Anonymous Site 3: "These strong [acidic] cleaners will not harm the shower glass."

Interpretation

These internet sites are recommending that people clean glass shower doors by pouring acid on them (vinegar, peroxide, maelic, Comet), which will eat into the porous glass surface. Then, all recommend gently scrubbing the surface of your glass shower doors with the acid on it. Scrubbing the glass surface of your shower doors, gentle or not, doubles the damage the acid can do.

What Happens If This Advice Is Followed

The pourous surface of your glass shower doors will become damaged with crevices on the surface. Limescale from hard water will settle into these crevices and create hard-to-clean stains. These crevices also attract bacteria, dirt and soap scum. Soon you cannot clean your glass shower doors. Normal cleaners won't be able to reach the stains or bacteria. Adding more abrasive cleaners will only cause further damage.

We Recommend ... cleaning glass shower doors a different way

For your existing glass shower doors, clean them with a gentle non-abrasive, non-acidic cleaner. Then as long as they still look good, add a glass protection application. We do this during our manufacturing phase, prior to installation, but our experts can take you through doing this yourself. We only recommend ClearShield, an award-winning product that forms multiple molecular bonds to itself and the porous glass surface. With ClearShield in place, cleaning your glass shower doors is cinch: squeegee dry your shower and use a gentle cleaner two to three times a week.

If Glass Shower Doors Already Have Stubborn Stains

Call our experts for a replacement quote and to find out their insider tricks. If you want to use a harsh abrasive anyway, they'll tell you which ones can cause the least damage and if glass protection can cover the glass damage immediately after stains have been removed.

I've been using ceramic top cleaner. Is that bad?

Thanks for commenting! While some conventional glass cleaners are classified as bases rather than acids, many still retain acidic qualities.

For best results, we recommend coating your shower glass with a glass surface treatment (like award-winning ClearShield), then maintaining it with a specialized cleaner (like AfterCare Shower Glass) every 2-3 weeks.

In addition to AfterCare, an effective and inexpensive glass cleaner is mild solution of water and vinegar (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water). Place the mixture in a spray bottle, apply it to the glass and wipe clean - never use straight vinegar, and never use a scrubber.

You are right! Thanks for giving the advice about what not to use to clean your shower doors. I will never use white vinegar again!
