What is beveled glass?

The term "beveled glass" refers to the process of cutting the edges of a piece of glass to a specific angle and size in order to produce an elegant, framed look. This process leaves the glass thinner around the edges of the piece, while the large middle portion remains thicker. Beveling glass is normally applied to pieces where the glass serves as a focal point in the room.

The edges of the beveling are determined by the thickness of the glass. The above illustration highlights the subtle differences between beveled edges on thinner and heavy glass.

Beveling can be applied to many glass applications. Beveled glass table tops and beveled glass table covers are very popular. Custom beveled glass table tops add just a touch of elegance to the table or desk on which they are used without dominating the piece – or the decor of the room in which they're placed.

You may also choose to combine strength with beauty: beveled edges can be applied to tempered glass so you can enjoy the decorative look in a stronger, more durable tempered beveled glass piece.

The bevel around a piece of glass can range in size from 1/4" to 1-3/4". The edges of the beveling are determined by the thickness of the glass. See illustration at right to view the subtle differences between beveled edges on thinner and heavy glass.

Another good design option is to apply beveling to cabinet glass and glass shelves. They are increasingly popular home design options for homeowners interested in updating their home décor, due in part to their superior ability to make a room appear lighter and feel larger. Beveled glass cabinet doors and beveled glass shelves offer visual appeal without inhibiting the light flowing through them, or obscuring the view of the pieces displayed within the cabinet.

Where to buy beveled glass

It's easy to buy custom cut beveled glass at Dulles Glass & Mirror in our online glass store – you don't even have to visit our glass showroom in VA or glass showroom in MD for most purchases. If you're buying a custom cut mirror, glass table top, glass table cover, glass shelves, or replacement glass, shop online and be sure to select the "Beveled Edge" option in the edging section while customizing your glass piece. You'll then be able to select your preferred bevel size – it's that easy!

There is an additional cost involved in selecting bevelled glass, but the increase in cost is normally not significant enough to be the determining factor. Here at Dulles Glass & Mirror we have the machinery to cut and bevel all types of glass on-site, so you know it will turn out just the way you want it.
